GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 MAYBOLE JUNIORS 2
Scorer: Grant
The visitors dominated the first half in terms of possession yet failed to create any real chances of great note, with Gary Matthews seldomed troubled in the Glens goal. In stark contrast the home side, despite being on the back foot for most of the half, had the best of the chances with a long range effort from Craig Feroz forcing the Maybole keeper to scurry along his goal-line to escort the ball wide. The keeper also did enough to get his finger tips to a corner-kick and take the ball off Feroz's head as he looked certain to nod it home from a few yards out. Half time Glens 0 Maybole 0
The injured Andy Gow was replaced at half-time by Willie Howie allowing John Paul Grant to push forward from his uncustomary role in midfield. On the hour mark the two players combined to give the Glens the lead, when a slide rule pass through the middle of a static Maybole defence released Grant to beat the offside trap and slot the ball beyond the advancing goalie.
David Gormley then came close on two occasions to extend the Glens' lead and a Stevie Agnew run from the middle of the park past defender after defender into to the visitor's penalty box deserved better than to be blocked by the keeper.
With eight minutes to go Maybole equalised when a corner kick from the right was met first time in the danger area only for Matthews to make a great block but he could do nothing to stop the rebound from being struck home with great finesse. Having gained their second wind on this still May evening, the visitors then killed the game in the last minute when a free kick from deep in the Glens half was headed cleanly home. Anything less than a victory would see the hosts join Kilsyth Rangers in the automatic relegation berths and if nothing else then the Glens record at Hannah Park would serve as pre-match confidence booster for Shotts.
However, things didn’t start too brightly for the BA’s and they went behind in the 12th minute after Davy Stewart had been barged down in the box with Chic Connolly sending the keeper the wrong way from the resultant spot-kick. The Glens almost doubled their advantage but Gavin Brown’s header crashed off the bar. From bad to worse for Shotts when they were reduced to ten, indiscipline having caused them dear throughout the season, however they were thrown a life-line four minutes from the break when the Martin Fusari, Glens' trialist keeper was beaten by a speculative lob. Half-time Shotts 1 Glens 1
The ten-men took heart and a spirited comeback aided by some slack defending by the Glens saw the hosts take the lead and then double that soon after and Premier league survival albeit via a play-off place looked promising. It looked slightly less promising when David Gormley gathered the ball in the centre circle and drove past one defender and then another on his way to goal, as third came to challenge him at the edge of the box, he unleashed a ferocious shot into the the keeper’s to right hand corner.
In added on time substitute Craig Feroz was pulled down in the box and Shotts were reduced to 9 men. Banks saved Feroz's spot kick but the referee ordered a re-take since the red-carded defender was still on his way off the field of play. Feroz buried the re-take and along with it any chance Shotts had of staying in the Premier Division. Full time Shotts 3 Glens 3
