East Kilbride Thistle vs. Glenafton Athletic : Super League First Division

EAST KILBRIDE THISTLE 2 GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1

Scorer: Armstrong

The Glens welcomed Steven Reilly, loan signing from Queen's Park to partner Dougie Ramsay at the centre of defence. The early skirmishes in this the first league encounter between the two sides was of the end-to-end variety, much of it pleasing to the eye with some good passing moves. The home side passed up a great opportunity on 10 minutes but with Ally Semple beaten the ball was cooped over the bar from 6 yards outs.

For the visitors a Gareth Armstrong header bounced of the top of the crossbar but the ball fell kindly Thistle defence. Simon Eeles hared down the left leaving all in his wake before slipping the ball past keeper Johnny Murdoch who had ventured to the edge of his penalty box and could only look behind him in hope as the ball rolled agonisingly beyond his far post. Dougie Ramsay came to the Glens rescue and cleared the ball off the line after Craig Miles evaded the challenges of both Reilly and Semple. Surprisingly the half ended goal-less. Thistle opened the scoring when a throw-in to the edge of the box was played back to the thrower who then crossed the ball to the far side of the six yard box for Steven Chaplain to coast in and bullet his free header home. The lead was soon doubled when a rebound from a corner was picked up on the right flank by Paul Woods who wriggled his way through a red sea of shirts to the bye-line and as the defence waited on the cut-back he chose instead to beat Semple from the narrowest of angles.

With two minutes remaining the Glens pulled one back with a peach of ina goal. Ramsay from the centre circle lofted the ball upfield for Steven Samson to win the header and the nearby Armstrong to kill the knock-down dead and drill a low hard shot into the corner of the goal beyond the reach of Murdoch.
