West of Scotland Cup (Whyte & McKay) 1st Round

  • Glens Goals

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 1 Arthurlie 2

Scorer : Dale Beattie

For the second season in succession since winning the cup in 2002 the Glens fell at home at the first. By all accounts a hard-working Arthurlie side deserved their victory over a Glens team missing the influential Carruth, Agnew and McCaig. Dale Beattie was on the scoresheet again but his second-half equaliser was cancelled out by an own-goal to give 'Lie a 2-1 win, their third consecutive victory over the Glens.

According to reports in the Arthurlie web-site the Arthurlie management team, including Glens legend Johnny Millar have resigned after an indifferent start to the season . Having finished Runners-up in their first season in the Super League these latest managerial casualties reflect a disturbing trend in the Junior game, with the margin between success and failure beginning to mimic that in the senior game.  Barrhead born Alex McLeish beware.

With Carruth Agnew and McCaig missing an under strength Glens side were always going to struggle in this tie. Agnew's presence in midfield and Carruth's overlapping runs were particularly missed.
Glens midfield struggled throughout. All credit to Athurlie though they played well and deserved their victory.

Arthurlie played to win and fought for everything, not a good display from the Glens. Our three players that couldnt play today were sorely missed and lets hope things will get better but to get to the point, thats us out of a cup I wanted to win too beside the Scottish Cup, maybe I expect too much from my team. We have a lot to play for yet so all is not lost.
I rest my case.
