Vale of Clyde vs. Glenafton Athletic: West of Scotland Cup 1st Round

VALE OF CLYDE 2 GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2 ( Vale of Clyde win 4-3 penalties)

Scorers: Savage, Miller

The Glens, with a man advantage squandered a two goal lead and lost out in a sudden death penalty shoot-out to exit the West of Scotland Cup at Fullarton Park. Chic Connolly and Chris Merrilees returned to the defence while Gordon Moffat move into a midfield role . Up front Joe Savage partnered Brian Miller and within 17 minute each player had a goal and an assist to their name. On 13 minutes Miller put home keeper Johnstone under pressure to clear a pass back which fell to Savage 25 yards from goal and the big striker side footed into with some force into the far corner of the net. Four minutes later a Simon Eeles cross from the right corner flag was gathered by Miller on the 6 yard box and rolled back to Savage on the penalty spot and although his shot at goal was blocked Miller snapped up the rebound and poked it home from 8 yards outs. Miller then turned provider again setting up David Clapperton but his brave header was well saved and the loose ball scrambled to safety. Five minutes from the break Chic Connolly and Vale's No. 6 squared up and were each shown red cards and as their differences boiled over in the doorway of the clubhouse, the fracas spread to the park and Joe Savage and a Vale player were ordered off. Back to the football and  Eeles was presented with a great opportunity to extend the Glens lead when released by Clapperton into acres of space, but was caught by a backtracking defender and his shot sailed over the bar.

Within two minutes the home side were down to 8 men as a second yellow card was brandished for a rash challenge. Brian Miller had the ball in the net in 65 minutes but was deemed to be offside and a minute later was denied by a great block on the 6 yard line after being set up by a deft touch from Chris Merrilees; the big defender too was later foiled by Johnstone. Controversy on the 75th minute when Miller released sub Pedro Serrao but a hasty offside flag gave the home side a free-kick from which they went up the park and won a spot-kick after a Moffat challenge. which was duly despatched by Morrison with some style. Vale's tails were now up and five minutes later they were level through a well drilled shot by Dowes from 20 yards out through a busy penalty box , to take the game to a shoot-out
