Glenafton Athletic vs. Girvan: Stagecoach Super League 1st Division

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 5 GIRVAN 2

Scorers: Connolly (3). Mullen, Savage

With top goalscorer Craig Feroz unavailable for selection striker Joe Savage made a return to the starting line up while trialist Pedro Luis Serrao was given a starting position in midfield.
Chic Connolly grabbed the headlines with his first Glens hat-trick but it was young keeper Ally Semple, behind the central back pairing of Gordon Moffat and trialist Jordan Mullen, that pipped several contenders to the man-of the match accolade.
The home side got off to a dream start when Chic Connolly opened the scoring in 4 minutes with a well taken free kick. Two minutes later it was 2-0 when young Jordan Mullen netted the loose ball from a goal mouth scramble. How-ever, with a strong wind at their back the Seasiders turned the tide when marksman Michael Moffat scored direct from a corner-kick and then David McVittie took the biscuit when he slammed home a wind assisted unstoppable shot giving Semple no chance. The half-time oranges did the business with the Glens restoring their two goal advantage in double quick time. On 47 minutes a Joe Savage header smashed off the bar but big Lily was first to react and head home the rebound  among some flying boots. A minute later he was pulled down by the keeper, who remained the park but could do nothing to stop Chic making it 4-2 from the spot.
Girvan refused to give up and took heart from the fact they already clawed back a two goal deficit and there was still 42 minutes on the clock. The Glens defence marshalled by Gordon Moffat stood firm and Ally Semple refused to be beaten with 3 or 4 excellent saves. With 8 minutes remaining Jamie McDonald almost scored a stunning goal but his fierce drive smacked off the bar.  Three minutes later the keeper brought McDonald down in the box, and to everyone’s surprise he remained on the park to face Chic’s spot-kick - but to no avail as he completed the hat-trick and the scoring for the day.
