Glenafton Athletic vs. Cumnock Juniors: West of Scotland Cup Quarter-Final

Glenafton Athletic 1 Cumnock Juniors 2

Scorer Craig Feroz

With Chris Fahey unavailable for selection due to to family reasons coach Chris Kelly took his place between the posts. Injury ruled out captain Willie Howie and centre-back Steven McGregor took his place in the middle of the park. Cumnock too hadn't their troubles to seek with a number of players cup-tied including player-manager Stevie Farrell. In attrocious conditions the Glens kicked off with a strong wind at their back. However, it was Kelly that had to be alert early on to pull off a magnificent save to stop the visitors from taking the lead. The Glens failed to take advantage of the wind and 'Nock goalkeeper Graeme Potter had hardly a save to make and yet could do nothing to stop the home side taking the lead with the last action of the first half. Simon Eeles snapped up a poor clearance on the half way line burst forward at pace and as Potter came out to narrow the angle laid the ball off to the far post for Craig Feroz to force the ball over the line. Half time Glens 1 Cumnock 0

The Glens almost doubled their lead soon after the re-start when Potter was beaten by a Jamie Doyle free kick but the ball cannoned off the outside of the keeper's far post. In a wind-assisted 10 minute spell the visitors turned the tables. A Kelly kick-out against the gale that seemed to take an age to reach half way to the half way line was volleyed back into his net in a nanosceond by Gareth Armstrong. Then a high up-and-under from the half way line left the Glens defence stranded and Kelly left alone on his goal line and with Graham Wilson bearing in on him the keeper failed to hold on to the greasy ball and Wilson tapped it home from a yard out. In a flurry of actvity in the closing minutes Chriz Zok was set up in the box but his touch took him beyond Potter to the by-line and there were no takers for his cut back across the goal mouth. A
slip saw Mark Quinn dispossessed on the cente circle and Wilson have a free run in on goal  but his lob over Kelly on his 18 yard line went just wide. Kelly then pulled over a great save to prevent Cumnock killing the tie and in the last minute Potter matched his counterpart with a brilliant block from Joe Savage to prevent the penalty shoot-out.
Full time Glens 1 Cumnock 2

Glenafton Athletic: Kelly; Moffat, Gow (Cameron), Merrilees, Quinn; Eeles, Doyle, McGregor, McMullan (Ramsay); Feroz (Zok), Savage
