Glenafton Athletic vs. Darvel: West of Scotand Cup 2nd Round

GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 5   DARVEL 0

Scorers: Feroz (3), McMullan, Quinn

Craig Feroz notched up his third Cup competition hat-trick of the season and his second in successive rounds of the West of Scotland. The in-form Feroz opened his account against Ayrshire District side Darvel after only 7 minutes, when with his back to goal he gathered a Mark Quinn throw-in at the edge of the visitors’ penalty box, twisted and and turned to wrong foot his marker and hit a low shot that beat keeper Alistair McGhee at his near post.

Dougie Ramsay was next to test the keeper with a fierce shot from 20 yards out but it whizzed past the far past. Chris Cameron then released Feroz down the right flank who then played the ball into the box for Chris Zok, but McGhee did well to block the young striker’s attempt.

On 15 minutes the Glens doubled their lead when Willie Howie stroked the ball out to the left wing for Chris Merrileess who lofted it deep into the danger area for Feroz to trap at the corner of the six yard box and to coolly lay it back for Mark Quinn to crash the ball high into the roof of the net. Two minutes later Paul McMullan, who tormented the Darvel defence throughout, was rewarded when he breezed into the box and brushed off a tackle and scooped the ball over the head of McGhee to put the home side three goals up and firmly in control of the game.

Pressure from Feroz forced the big Darvel defender into a poor pass-back from 30 yards out which Zok gratefully snapped up and waltzed into the box but was caught in two minds between having a shot at goal or passing it to the incoming Feroz and in the end the chance for a fourth frittered away. Panic stations minutes later as McGhee tried to grab the ball from the feet of McMullan and Zok, and lost his bearings, but Zok’s shot was blocked by a trusty defender.

Darvel were seldom seen as an attacking force but now and again they produced some excellent passing play none more so when a Ferguson pass took both Gordon Moffat and Steven McGregor out of the game and found Kelly who had made a great run into the box , and his first touch appeared to have foxed covering Merrilees but the big defender timed his tackle to perfection and the danger was cleared. Before the break Chris Cameron played a peach of the ball through the middle for Feroz but McGhee dived at full stretch to save well and then block Zok’s attempt to stroke the rebound home.

Half time: Glens 3 Darvel 0

Darvel started the second half in determined fashion and Chris Fahey was tested with a well struck shot from 10 yards out . At the other end McGhee did well to clear a McMullan corner-kick from the head of Feroz but could only stand and stare as Howie’s thundered the loose ball from 20 yards out only for it to be deflected over the bar. Feroz then set McMullan free who burst into the box and rounded the keeper but failed to find the net from the tightest of angles. With 10 minutes of the half gone Moffat hared up the right touchline and and played a short one-two with Zok before crossing the ball into the six yard box for Feroz to side foot it beyond McGhee.

Both sides made full use of their subs bench as the pitch got heavier including Andy Ward coming on for Steven McGregor and Glens new signing Danny O’Donnell who came on to replace workhorse Willie Howie. The Glens continued to enjoy the bulk of the play and with 20 minutes to Craig Feroz rounded off another great shift with a powerful run through the middle and from 20 yards out placed his shot perfectly over the head of McGhee rooted to his six yard line. Little wonder he received a rousing reception from the Loch Park supporters when he was replaced by John McMillan.

The Glens went on to create a host of other chances the best of which fell to Dougie Ramsay, after he picked up the ball on the edge of the box from an inch perfect pass from Cameron, but keeper McGhee stood firm and blocked the ensuing thunderbolt .
