KELLO ROVERS 1 GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2
Scorers : Doyle, Eeles
The opening match of the Ardagh Sectional League Cup saw new signings Chris Fahey, Chris Cameron and Dougie Ramsay make their competitive debut for the Glens.
The Glens pressed from the kick-off on the spruce Nithside Park surface but were caught out after only 2 minutes with a lightning fast counter-attack as the Rovers burst down the right played the ball into the box for the incoming forward who picked his spot to give Fahey no chance. Within 10 minutes were back on level terms. Steven McGregor from deep in the Glens defence supplied Chris Merrilees marauding up the the right touch line and he in turn found Jamie Doyle on the left who took no time to slam the ball into the Kello keeper’s far corner. Both sides created numerous chances in a highly entertaining and evenly matched first half with some excellent football on display, but without fining the net again.

The Glens introduced Simon Eeles for McGregor with Merrilees moving in to the centre of defence and Ramsay falling back to the right back slot. Eeles pace and trickery helped give the Glens the upper hand in the second half . A jinking run down the left flank left the Rovers rooted and forced to concede a corner from Eeles ball to the back post. Justice was done when Simon was first to react to flick home the Rovers’ attempt to clear Doyle’s corner kick. The ball never fell kindly for Craig Feroz on two occasions to extend the Glens lead and then the home keeper tipped a JP Grant fizzer over the bar. The Rovers counter attacks, although fewer, were still a menace to the Glens defence. In what proved to be the last chance of the match the home side were unfortunate not to equalise when a header from a corner-kick went inches over the bar.
