Irvine Victoria vs. Glenafton Athletic Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup 1st Round

IRVINE VICS 1 GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 2

Scorers: Haggarty, Gormley

A Frankie Haggarty free-kick that whizzed over the bar was the Glens first attempt at goal; whilst Vics came from a corner-kick where Gary Matthews was alert to block a near post header. Stevie Agnew had a great trademark from box to box ending with a powerful shot at goal which deflected off a Vics defender and hit the woodwork with the home goalie rooted to the spot.

It was the home side that took the lead after being awarded a free kick on the left flank just inside the Glens half . A well flighted ball deep into the penalty box saw Chris Merrilees win the header but unfortunately it flew beyond Matthews into his own net. Half -time Vics 1 Glens 0

Haggarty hit another free-kick from distance but this was comfortably saved. Chic Connolly released Craig Feroz down the right with an inch perfect pass and fending off a defender the striker made good progress to the bye-line and cut the ball back into the box for Aggie, but his first time effort looped over the bar. A Haggarty corner-kick then bounced off the top of the home cross-bar to safety. However, Frankie was not be denied and picking the ball up on the left wing he drove infield and then unleashed a low hard shot through a busy penalty box and into the back of the net for a deserved equaliser. David Gormley then launched the ball from half-way line for Feroz to head out to Aggie on the left wing whose high ball into the box was first of all punched clear by the keeper before he blocked Feroz’s effort at burying the rebound, with the ball still loose a timely intervention by a fellow defender prevented Gormley from tapping it home. The keeper then pushed a Haggarty shot onto the woodwork before the goal that was on the cards came calling. A corner kick was played to the back post for Kevin Deeney to feed it back into the danger area and although Andy Gow’s shot was saved by the keeper he could do nothing to stop Gormley stabbing the ball home from a few yards out. Frankie came close to putting the cup tie beyond any doubt when his free kick beat the wall but rattled the post.
