HERMES 0 GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 5

Scorers: Howie, Whalen 2, Eeles, Brown

The Glens secured their passage to the next round with a comfortable win over North Region Premier League side Hermes. After passing up a number of chances the visitors finally broke the deadlock in the 21 st minute,  David Gormley darted into the penalty box and turned the left back one way and then the other before putting in a perfect cross beyond the flummoxed goalkeeper for captain Willie Howie to head home from a few yards out.

Six minutes later Stevie Agnew burst down the left flank and rather head for the goal-line opted to play the ball back into the path of Simon Eeles who slammed the ball low and hard into the far corner from 20 yards outs. Hermes uphill task took on mountainous proportions when they were reduced to 10 men following a scuffle between two of their own players during the post-mortem.

With 5 minutes of the half remaining the Glens too were reduced to 10 men when Chic Connolly was sent-off for retaliation to a poor challenge. Although parity was restored in terms of mumbers the Glens made it 3-0 soon after. Gormley gathered the ball and with his back to the defender shielded it well before laying off to Jamie Doyle who then hit a delicate chip into the box for Stephen Whalen, who twisted and turned leaving the defender still chasing shadows whilst he thundered the ball into the net from 15 yards out. Chances came and went for the Glens in the second half to ensure that the Hermes goalkeeper, their man of the match had another busy 45, in stark contrast to Glens goalie Gary Matthews who had had a less hectic afternoon. However, Hermes held out until the closing 10 minutes, Howie played a peach of pass through to Aggie who scampered down the left wing and played the ball into the box behid the Hermes defence for the incoming Gavin Brown to crash the ball home from 12 yards, off the underside of the bar. Five minutes later it was 5-0 after Aggie and JP Grant worked a set piece on the left touchline for JP to fire the cross into the six yard box for the lurking Whalen to guide the ball with back of his head into the net beyond the bemused goalie.
